Organizations within RTTC regions/cities that are building a base of grassroots leaders in low-income, working class communities of color to strategically challenge neo-liberal economic policies. Core members are committed to doing political education and leadership development with their membership bases; and engaging in place-based struggles that protect low income communities of color.
On May 19th, students from around the country rallied in Washington DC to call for deeper investments in their education. 2 months later, adult allies had a similar rally. This video is a call for more intergenerational collaboration to Save Our Schools.
In the midst of a nationwide panic about young people using “flash mob technology” for bad, the young organizers and performers at Project HIP-HOP took some time out on August 18 to remind people about the resistance-art based roots of Flash Mobs by staging a street theater flash mob in Roxbury’s Dudley Square. On Friday July 29, the Roxbury Environmental Empowerment Project (REEP) convened youth from throughout the New England area at SEIU in Dorchester to discuss issues ranging from the School to Prison Pipeline to Transportation Justice. Youth led workshops, shared ideas for change, and celebrated wins together as they built relationships for building more just and sustainable communities.
Last week, dozens of Boston Public Schools students protested the lack of student voice in the decision by Boston’s unelected School Committee to close or consolidate several schools in order to balance their budget. This follow up highlights some ways in which some adults are working with youth to ensure that students to have a role at the table as we make important decisions about their education.
Wednesday, March 23, students from throughout Boston gathered in Downtown Boston to march to the Boston School Committee meeting to protest drastic budget cuts and school closings. The youth also respond to claims that their organizing was instigated and manipulated by adults with their own self-interests.
In late February, more than 700 high school students swarmed the Statehouse to stand up for their job funding. Before the rally, youth organizers met with Governor Deval Patrick at the Boston-Area Youth Organizing Project.
