Massachusetts soon followed suit with their own version, the Budget Amendment 172.1. With Domestic Violence declared an epidemic in Massachusetts, law makers struggle to find a solution. After the brutal murder to Robin Mendes, the Blodget Law took effect, extending the sentence from 2 to 5 years for repeat offenders and making it a felony. Press Pass TV investigates whether the length of the sentence truly matters, or if it is what happens while the men are behind bars which does. They uncover an inadequate system, lack of accountability and communication resulting in a high recidivism rate.

Mayor Menino has refused to expand a civilian review board (which handles complaints against the Police) siting a lack of complaints. Press Pass TV investigates if the amount of complaints are reflective of people’s experiences with the Police, speaking with community members, police, and youth from the Freedom House.

In the early 90s Boston witnessed a period of 18 months where no one under 17 was murdered. This joint effort between police, clergy, youth, and many others gained national recognition as the Boston Miracle. One controversial part of this success was the lengthy incarceration sentences received by many young people.

As many youth who were sentenced during the Boston Miracle have served their time and are now returning to our community and into a collapsing economy with little to no job skills, violence is once again on the rise.

As the City and especially the Boston Foundation look for a way to duplicate the Boston Miracle, Press Pass TV examines the crucial role that Street Workers play in making their efforts a success.
